About XWARN?

XWARN was formed shortly after a F5 tornado in 1974 devastated much of Xenia, Ohio. XWARN was specifically charted to provide the city of Xenia and Greene County personnel with a reliable backup to their civil communications when needed in times of an emergency. Growing from only 15 Hams soon after its inception, we now boast a growing membership of over 100 licensed amateur radio operators, principally from Greene and Montgomery counties.

In addition to providing an emergency communications capability to the city of Xenia, club members also support a wide variety of civic functions by providing communications to support  parades, cycling and jogging events, festival traffic flow and hot air balloon events. We participate and enjoy the annual ARRL( National Association for Amateur Radio) sponsored Field Day event. We also have members who have special interests in Amateur Television, Satellite Communications, VHF weak signal DX, VHF & HF Packet, HF Amtor & Pactor, APRS and HF DX operations.

Each year, XWARN joins the other great Greene County Clubs & sponsors an annual amateur radio education program, teaching Technician & General License classes. Many of our present club members migrated into dues paying members and supporters by attending these classes. Many of the already licensed hams attend these free classes just to hear and brush up on the technical part of their favorite hobby.

The club sponsors a 2 meter repeater which is located on a 200 foot tower, just south of Xenia. The repeater has approximately 100 watts output and is located on one of Greene County's higher hills. There are three remote receive sites throughout the county which are linked back to the main transmit site, making hand held communications quite feasible in the county and greater Xenia area.

The repeater has an autopatch & Echolink capabilities for club members, including a reverse phone to radio capability, and cross-band capability permitting linkage with other 2 meter, 220 Mhz, 440 Mhz, and 10 meter repeaters.

XWARN is also fortunate to have a special relationship with the Dayton Amateur Radio Association, which allows us to annually sponsor an official Dayton Hamvention T-Shirt concession. The planning and manning of the booth for 3 days involves many XWARN member volunteers.
